Hearing FAQ

How Do I Know if I'm Suffering from Hearing Loss?

  • Look for the signs - do you need to turn up the volume on the tv to higher levels? Do you struggle to hear people and think they're mumbling? Do you struggle hearing people nearby when in noisy or crowded places? Do your ears ring? All of these are signs that you might be suffering from some level of hearing loss.

Who Can Suffer from Hearing Loss?

  • Hearing loss is not limited to any specific group. Symptoms of hearing loss can, however, prove to be more prevalent with age. Any person who has an underlying issue or goes through experiences that damage parts of the ear responsible for normal hearing function can suffer from hearing loss.

Why Are Hearing Aids Expensive?

  • The cost of the service that goes with hearing aids is cooked into the initial price. Your hearing aids require periodic adjustments and won't be of much use without an audiologist who knows how to make them work best for you. With the initial purchase, you have access to unlimited service for up to three years.

Are Cue Tips Safe for Your Ear?

  • Cue tips are made to neatly scoop up wax in the ear, but NOT inside the ear. You should never attempt to put anything into your ear, as you will only push wax in further and possibly damage your inner ear. Your ears should naturally deposit wax, allowing you to clean up the outer ear without issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Any Hearing Aid Style?

Your audiologist will make recommendations on the hearing aid style you should utilize depending on the nature of what is causing your hearing loss. Some hearing aid models might not be as cosmetically attractive, but could be essential for more serious levels of hearing loss to provide bone conduction.

Will Hearing Aids Restore My Hearing?

No - effects of hearing loss are permanent. There is no substitute for your body's natural ability to interpret and filter sounds. A hearing aid serves to help amplify parts of your hearing that are weaker, but it does not have the same ability to distinguish and filter sound as your natural hearing does.

Who will I be seeing for my hearing test?

Principal Audiologist, Julie Ayling, has a Master of Audiology and holds a current Certificate of Clinical Practice. Julie is a member of Audiology Australia. Julie has over 20 years experience in audiology working in a number of areas within the industry including the public and private sectors together with the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital. Julie worked for the worlds largest and best known hearing aid manufacturer as a product specialist providing her with a wealth of hearing aid knowledge and understanding for the technology. Julie has a special interest in auditory processing disorder and classroom difficulties and provides valuable recommendations and support to schools, parents and patients.

Where is Ayling Hearing & Audiology Clinic?

Ayling Hearing & Audiology Clinic is an independent, boutique hearing clinic located in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The clinic is located in Sandringham. Ayling Hearing has been providing professional hearing services to patients for over 21 years and is trusted by the local community, GP’s, schools, pediatricians and ENT’s and many more specialists.

What is the minimum age for an APD assessment?

Auditory Processing Assessment can be conducted on children from 7 years old. We only use Australian standards. Be aware of clinics offering APD under this age and also using computer based assessments!

What is an Independence Clinic?

Many hearing clinics are either owned by multinational hearing aid manufacturers or large corporations. We believe this can create a conflict of interest in providing quality recommendations and limited service and may focus on the bottom line rather than outcomes for their clients. Proudly independent and family owned and operated, we always act in the best interest of our patients. We offer professional hearing care, an extensive range of hearing services, and hearing devices from a number of quality brands if they are required. At Ayling Hearing & Audiology Clinic you will experience high level expertise, a world class range of hearing technology, coupled with old-fashioned service and support. Ayling Hearing & Audiology Clinic is the ideal place for people who prefer personalised care and individual solutions for their hearing needs.

Who can attend the clinic?

Ayling Hearing sees patients from 4 years of age for hearing assessments and from 7 years of age for auditory processing assessments. We are contracted to provide hearing services to Pensioners and Veterans through the Commonwealth Government Hearing Services Program (HSP), and see pilots for aviation medicals.Patients are often referred by their GP’s, ENT’s, medical specialists and/or teachers but often patients attend with a concerned parent or because they themselves are concerned and attend the clinic without referral.
